MLB Expansion

The other day I heard a host on one of the Metro area's three sports talk stations call the unbalanced number of teams in the American and National Leagues the"stupidest thing in sports." He wasn't talking about expansion or contraction as the best solution, but instead balancing the leagues with fifteen teams each. If there was unlimited interleague play then that might be a solution, but the way the leagues are made up, an unbalanced number of teams in each league makes sense and is in fact the only way to create a reasonable schedule.

His comments got me thinking about the possibility of MLB expansion. The easiest solution would be to add two teams to the AL. Adding a team in Portland as part of the West division and one in New Orleans as part of the AL Central would be one possibility. Another logical move would be to add two teams in Oklahoma City and New Orleans and put them in the Central and move the Royals to the West where they would play more games against their traditional rivals the A's and Angles. Portland, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, and San Antonio have all proven that they can support major league teams in other sports and are geographically in areas that MLB needs teams if it chooses to expand.
