The Beatles vs. Elvis

In the movie Pulp Fiction there's a line of dialog in which Mia calls Vincent an "Elvis man". In the final cut of the movie the line is a throwaway. Nothing explains how Mia has that bit of information or what she really means by it. The explanation to this mystery lie in the deleted scenes. The line was supposed to be a reference to an earlier conversation in which it was asserted that one can be a fan of Elvis or The Beatles, or even both, but not both equally.
I've been more of a Beatles guy. I'm not entirely sure why, but I've definitely never been a fan of either Elvis's music or movies. Recently that's changed a little bit. I've been making an intentional effort to broaden my musical taste. I'd never given Elvis a chance. I of course had heard some of his songs and even enjoyed them a little bit, but I'd never thought of myself as liking Elvis.
Not too long ago I heard Elvis's version of "In the Ghetto" and my opinion started to change. Elvis was no longer a fat drug addict or a sneering trashy kid. He actually sang for more than the money and he was someone with a real ethos. As a result I recently checked out a greatest hits CD from the library. You know what, I still like the Beatles better, but the gap has definitely narrowed and I've changed my idea about the musical taste of "Elvis men."

  1. The Beatles. I still have a very hard time with Elvis and is some respects I think it is because some of his music leans back to much into country and not southern rock and rock. I some respects I would liken Elvis to a bad Johnny Cash and I don't like a lot of Johnny Cash either.
