This week is Educators Appreciation week. I know this because when I went to check my mailbox at school this morning there was a 100 grand candy bar taped upside down to a piece of paper. It's amazing how unappreciated that can really make you feel. I mean, wow, a candy bar really makes up for class sizes of over 35 and seeing 20 of your colleagues cut.
Juxtapose the image of the candy bar with my other experience this morning.
R. a former teacher's aide of mine, knocked on the office door and said. "I have something for you." She usually brings cookies and is a great baker so I was pretty excited. Instead of producing a plate of baked goodies, she pulled a single sheet of paper out of her backpack. It was a copy of the letter she received that told her she won a $4,000 scholarship thanks in (small) part to the letter of recommendation that I wrote for her. She wanted me to know and to say thanks.
This is why I teach.
